First Trailer Arrives for 'The Great Gatsby'

Lights...camera...jazz!

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow have debuted the first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” and boy, does it look swell.

Shot last year in Australia, the $120 million pic features a star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton and is based on the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Luhrmann, who last teamed with DiCaprio on another literary classic, “Romeo and Juliet” (1996), has a knack for jazzing up the visuals in his films and “Gatsby” appears to be no exception.

Warners also seems to be casting a wide net with the trailer. The 1920's-set footage features two songs from modern-day artists Jay-Z and Jack White, who covers U2's "Love is Blindness."

One of the most popular novels of the 20th Century, Fitzgerald's tale of American excess has spawned a Broadway play and multiple films, including Jack Clayton's 1974 pic starring Robert Redford and scripted by Francis Ford Coppola.

Luhrmann and Craig Pearce adapted the script after the “Moulin Rouge” helmer purchased the rights in 2008.

“The ‘special effect’ in this movie is seeing fine actors in the prime of their acting careers tearing each other apart,” Luhrmann told the New York Times earlier this year.

Produced by Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher, “The Great Gaysby” opens in 3D and 2D on Christmas Day.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s mesmerizing teaser for 'The Master'

Master_boffo

Paul Thomas Anderson's religious drama finally saw the light of day Monday as The Weinstein Company unveiled footage from the director’s mysterious film, "The Master," in addition to Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" and David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook," at a special presentation in Cannes.

“The Master,” which stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, centers on a 1950's cult leader whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America.

Reportedly cut by Anderson himself, the drama's first teaser (see below) focuses solely on drifter Freddie Sutton (Phoenix), a Naval officer whose sinister ways come into question by a superior officer. Phoenix's character eventually becomes the right-hand man of ‘The Master’ Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman) in the film.

Judging from the trailer, "The Master" represents another dark, psychological turn for Anderson, whose "There Will Be Blood" earned five Oscar nominations in 2007, including a Best Actor win for star Daniel Day Lewis.

Paul-thomas-anderson-philip-seymour-hoffman-the-master"The Master" also reunites Anderson with "There Will Be Blood" composer Johnny Greenwood, of Radiohead.

Amy Adams and Laura Dern co-star in the pic, which Anderson has largely kept under wraps for three years. (Right: PTA recently provided a small, 65mm image of Hoffman preaching in a scene from 'The Master' to blog Cigarettes and Red Vines)

Hoffman’s character is rumored to be loosely based on Scientology founder Ron L. Hubbard.

“The Master,” produced by Anderson, JoAnne Sellar, John Lesher, Bill Pohlad and Megan Ellison, arrives Oct. 12.

CANNES TRAILER: Michael Haneke's 'Amour'

VIDEO: Will Smith slaps kissy reporter at premiere

Screen-shot-2012-05-18-at-3-47-27-pm

Here comes the Men in SMACK!

Will Smith has always had an energetic and playful relationship with the media--that was until 'the kisses.'

Smith, in Mowscow for the premiere of Sony's "Men in Black 3," was caught on tap slapping a Ukranian reporter Friday after the reporter got a little too close for Smith's liking.

In the video below, the reporter can be seen bestowing a kiss on each of Smith's cheeks, a European custom, causing Smith to exclaim "What the hell is wrong with you man?" before slightly backhanding the reporter in the face.

According to TMZ sources, Smith became so upset because the journo's lips apparently grazed the actor's.

See for yourself.
